Meaningful Recycling Projects From Department of Gastronomy and Culinary Arts

Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), Faculty of Tourism, Department of Gastronomy and Culinary Arts students carried out yet another significant project which aimed increasing environmental consciousness and public awareness. The project based on zero waste theme, items created from recycled materials were arranged for the nursing home residents, offering them a morale boost while also promoting awareness about environmental responsibility.

During the first event held at the Gazimağusa Ay Işığı Care Home, soaps made from waste oils collected in the EMU Gastronomy Department's kitchen and compotes made from surplus fruits supplied by Arkın Iskele Hotel were presented to the nursing home residents. The students explained the recycling process, demonstrated how these products were made, and inspired others with their environmentally friendly approaches. The project resulted in products that benefited both the environment and the community.

Another similar project was carried out in an Elder's Home located in Lapta where the zero waste theme was highlighted. Students gifted soaps made from recycled materials to the residents. The event, enriched with homemade pastries and lively conversations, provided a meaningful experience for both the residents and participants. Both projects emphasized key messages on sustainability, waste reduction, and community solidarity.

Expressing their contentment and satisfaction on successfully carrying out the specified projects, the Chair of EMU Community Involvement Center Assist. Prof. Dr. Nazenin Ruso Kandemir said; “Through these projects, we aim to contribute to both the community and the environment. Our students have created meaningful awareness by showing how waste can be converted into valuable products through recycling. At EMU, we consistently prioritize sustainability and social responsibility".

Following the event, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Tourism Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mine Haktanır made remarks on the projects, saying; “It is a valuable accomplishment for our Department of Gastronomy students to participate in such meaningful projects, both from an academic and social responsibility perspective. Introducing these recycled products to the nursing home residents helps promote environmental awareness and fosters stronger community solidarity. I sincerely congratulate all the students and our coordinator involved in this project".
