Operating under Eastern Mediterranean University Communication Faculty Community Involvement Center, Genesis IMC Agency has introduced another meaningful event through organising a conference entitled “Children’s Rights”. EMU Communication Faculty academic staff member Assist. Prof. Dr. Metin Ersoy, Lawyer Hande Güzoğlu and Social Services Specialist Barış Başel were the main speakers of the conference which was attended by a crowded group of participants.
The first speaker Assist. Prof. Dr. Metin Ersoy talked about the place of children in media and how media affects them. Assist. Prof. Dr. Ersoy also put forth that from time to time, children are negatively affected by wrong attitute or behavior but added that media should not be the only one to blame.
Following Assist. Prof. Dr. Ersoy, Lawyer Hande Güzoğlu briefly stated the children’s rights and provided information about the government’s responsibilities in this respect. Güzoğlu also added that in TRNC, there is no juvenile court to deal with juvenile criminals. At the end of her speech, Güzoğlu provided her recommendations regarding this issue.
The last speaker Barış Başel talked about psychological and physical child abuse. Highlighting the wrong concepts in society regarding physical abuse, Başel stated that quiet, introvert children who have no self confidence and family support are more vulnerable. Başel also invited families not to compare their children with others but to see them as individuals.
